Transport Canada is continually developing and defining measures to efficiently and effectively secure air cargo movements throughout the supply chain. The Air Cargo Security (ACS) program is a result of those efforts. The program enhances aviation security by:
- Strengthening the regulations, standards and technologies for air cargo screening;
- Increasing the participation of shippers, agents/freight forwarders and air carriers in a secure
- supply chain that reduces the risks of terrorist or other unlawful interventions;
- Reinforcing industry awareness and commitment to air cargo security;
- Increasing the confidence of Canadians and international partners in Canada’s air cargo security regime.
By December 31, 2012, 100% of shipments transported onboard domestic passenger flights departing designated Canadian airports must be secured and confirmed at the air carrier level as having met security requirements. Shipments must come from a Registered Shipper or must be security screened by one of the Transport Canada approved methods.
What does this mean if you ship with Loomis? If you are a Canadian shipper and your shipment is destined for a domestic location, you must register with the ACS program to become a Registered Shipper before December 31, 2012.
How do I become a Registered Shipper? An online application can be found at Transport Canada. To contact the ACS support Centre for more information call toll free at 1-866-375-7342 or email aircargo-fretaerien@tc.gc.ca
What do I need to become a Registered Shipper? You will need your legal business name, registered trade or operating name and a business number (issued by the Canada Revenue Agency). In addition, you will need to supply your business address, mailing address (if different) and contact information. You will need to designate Loomis Express as the referral company so that we can confirm an existing business relationship if asked by Transport Canada.
What will happen if I don’t register by December 31, 2012? Your shipment will be screened by an Approved Participant screening facility prior to uplift to ensure that it is deemed secure. This may cause delays in transit.
Please ensure that you take the time and fill out an application to become a Registered Shipper before December 31, 2012. Your support and participation in the program will reduce safety risks, increase the security of the traveling public and keep goods moving throughout Canada efficiently.
